Food and Beverages on Vlieland

Eating out on Vlieland has a charm all its own: on this virtually car-free island you simply walk or cycle to your table, with nearly all the conviviality gathered in the only village, Oost-Vlieland.

All on the Dorpsstraat: the greatest concentration of places to eat is in and around the Dorpsstraat, the characterful main street of Oost-Vlieland, with restaurants, eetcafés and terraces in a row.
To your table without a car: as the island is virtually car-free, you can settle in anywhere at your ease and head back on foot or by bike afterwards, with no parking hassle.
Dining with a view of the Wadden: at the edge of the village and by the harbour you can sit down overlooking the Wadden Sea, wonderful after a day on the beach or in the dunes.

Regional products: the taste of Vlieland

Think of Vlieland and you think of beach, dunes and woodland, but the island also has a surprisingly rich culinary side to immerse yourself in.

Cheese from the bunker: on Vlieland an island cheesemaker produces unique seaweed cheeses, ripened deep underground in an old bunker, where the cool, damp air gives them their distinctive flavour. Come and taste them at a cheese tasting, or make your own during a workshop.
100% Vlieland honey: beehives are dotted all over the island, and the honey the bees make is perhaps the only fully Vlieland product, each location with a slightly different taste of the surrounding nature.
Fresh from the sea: set on the Wadden Sea, the restaurants serve the catch of the day, from fresh shrimp, mussels and oysters to the much-loved smoked eel, a real treat.
Beer with the island in it: on the edge of land and water, Fortuna Vlieland brews sustainable beer with pure dune water and island ingredients such as sea buckthorn, cranberry and even sea lettuce, from a fresh Duin Blond to robust IPAs. A tasting with a tour is the best way to discover the local beer culture.
Gin with a salty soul: let yourself be surprised too by the craft island gin, flavoured with typically Wadden ingredients such as cranberry, samphire and sea lettuce, for a fresh, slightly briny signature.

Restaurants

For many people, not having to cook is one of the greatest luxuries of a holiday, and Vlieland. offers plenty of scope for it.

For every moment: pull up a chair in a pancake house, a restaurant or an eetcafé. From a quick, tasty bite to a beautifully prepared multi-course dinner, there is something in every price range.
Breakfast and lunch: many hotels and eateries serve breakfast until 10:00, and in the Netherlands lunch is usually taken between 12:00 and 14:00.
Dinner and later: dinner is generally served between 17:00 and 20:00. Many restaurants close around 22:00, but various venues, terraces and bars still serve dishes and snacks after that.

Terraces

Thirsty after a warm day, tired from an outing, or simply fancy a drink? In the centre you're well served all day long.

For every thirst: all day long they pour soft drinks, beer, cocktails and more, whatever you're in the mood for.
The right spot: settle down at one of the many cosy terraces or cafés in the centre of Vlieland., nicely in the sun, in the shade or out of the wind.
Convivial until late: at the bar or around the table, with friends or to meet new people, enjoy the atmosphere and let yourself be indulged into the small hours.

Two beach pavilions

On Vlieland you won't find a long row of beach bars like on the mainland, but two thoroughly individual pavilions, each with its own distinct character.

't Badhuys: on the Badweg, right on the North Sea beach in front of Strandhotel Seeduyn, sits this pavilion, which in 1995 became the first beach venue in the Netherlands granted permanent status. Following a complete renovation in 2017 it was named the best beach pavilion in the country, with an easy-going atmosphere and a kitchen inspired by the seasons and pure, fresh ingredients, from breakfast through to dinner.
Oost: at the easternmost tip of the beach stands this seasonal pop-up pavilion, rebuilt every spring and dismantled again after summer. The daily-changing menu revolves around fresh fish and shellfish, straight from the sea, served in a beachy interior with views over the North Sea and the dunes.
Two flavours, two seasons: while 't Badhuys stays open all year round, Oost appears only in season, from early spring through to the end of summer.
