Cheese Bunker - Guided tour

The Kaasbunker on Vlieland is an Atlantic Wall bunker beneath the Vuurboetsduin, the island's highest dune. Cheesemaker Nils Koster matures Vlieland cheese here.
What can you expect at the Kaasbunker?
History: The bunker was built during the Second World War. After years of experimenting, Koster made the first Vlieland seaweed cheese. The former water-filter building on top became an exhibition space.
Highlights: Highlights of the Kaasbunker are:
- The hatch through which you see the cheeses ripening underground. The bunker itself is closed for safety and hygiene.
- Vlieland seaweed cheese, made with island ingredients such as seaweed, crow garlic and honey clover.
Practical information
- Surroundings: The Kaasbunker is close to the Vlieland lighthouse.
- Tip: The Kaasbunker is open only a few afternoons a week, more often in the school holidays. Check the current times before your visit.
