Dodemansbol - Monument

The Dodemansbol is a small, quiet cemetery in the dunes of Vlieland, right by the Postweg. Behind this modest place lies a moving story about an 18th-century shipwreck.

What can you expect at the Dodemansbol?
- A stranded ship from Málaga: In the 18th century, a ship from the Spanish port of Málaga ran aground near the Vallei van Malgum. The name Malgum is a corruption of it.
- Buried in the dunes: Because of a contagious disease among the crew, the shipwrecked sailors were not allowed into the village. Those who died were buried on the spot in the dunes.
- Reburied in 1907: When the Postweg was built in 1907, the skeletons were found again. They were given a new resting place in this small cemetery, known on the island as the Bol van Dooie or Dodemansbol (dead man's mound).
- A place of reflection: In the middle of unspoilt nature, the Dodemansbol is a place to pause and think about the hard life at sea in times gone by.
