Meeuwenduinen - Nature

The Meeuwenduinen (Seagull Dunes) on Vlieland form a unique nature reserve on the western side of the island, nestled between the North Sea and the Kroon’s Polders.
What can you expect in the Meeuwenduinen?
- Breeding ground for gulls and songbirds: In spring, black-headed gulls breed here, along with songbirds such as grasshopper warblers, bluethroats, nightingales, stonechats and linnets. The gull colonies raise their chicks in this area.
- Spectacular autumn migration: In autumn, the Meeuwenduinen are one of the best places on Vlieland to witness bird migration. Thousands of songbirds such as skylarks, siskins, yellowhammers, redstarts, crossbills and woodlarks pass by. With some luck, you might even spot rare species such as snow buntings or yellow-browed warblers.
- Birds of prey in action: The large flocks of migratory birds also attract raptors. Goshawks, sparrowhawks and hobbies are often seen hunting here during migration.
- Unique nature experience: In addition to birds, you’ll discover the typical dune flora of Vlieland. The area changes with the seasons, offering new experiences – from singing nightingales in spring to impressive clouds of migratory birds in autumn.
