Witte lid - Nature

The Witte lid is a large, high dune on the eastern side of Vlieland, between the Fortweg and campsite Stortemelk. It is a quiet and rugged part of the island, where the top rewards you with a wonderful view.
What can you expect at the Witte lid?
- A dune with character: In the past, this area was also known as the Oosterlid. The name Witte lid (white dune) probably comes from the white sand and the sparsely vegetated slopes.
- Views over sea and beach: As soon as you reach the top, a wide view opens up over the North Sea and the beach. A perfect place to pause for a moment and enjoy the peace and quiet.
- Flower-rich dune valley: At the foot of the dune lies the Oosterse Vallei, a damp dune valley known for its wealth of flowers. Special orchids grow here, such as the green-winged orchid and the lesser butterfly orchid.
- Cycling along the heath: The Witte lid cycle path takes you along the heath.

- Combine with: Nearby is the Sjouwersmansbol lookout tower, and further east the unspoilt Noordoosthoek awaits with its quiet beach.
- Tip: Stay on the paths, so that the fragile dune vegetation and the orchids in the valley are protected.
