• Cemetery: The name Dodemansbol refers to the nearby, small and modest reburial cemetery that you pass before reaching the hide.
• Shipwreck: In the 17th century, a ship from Málaga ran aground at the place now known as the Valley of Malgum; the name “Malgum” is a corruption of this Spanish port city.
• Dodemansbol: The contagious plague among the crew meant that the shipwrecked sailors were not allowed into the village. The dead were buried on the spot, far from the settlement, to prevent infection.
• Reburial: During the construction of the Postweg in 1907, the remains were uncovered again and reburied here. The site is known on Vlieland as the “Bol van Dooie” or Dodemansbol.
