• Unique forest from the 1930s: Lange Paal is a man-made forest planted in the 1930s to prevent sand drifts. Today, it offers a lush contrast to the open dune landscapes of Vlieland.
• Special name story: The name “Lange Paal” refers to a measuring post from Rijkswaterstaat. When the old post couldn’t be removed, the new one was placed on top – resulting in a strikingly long pole.
• Cranberry picking in autumn: During autumn, you’re allowed to pick cranberries here yourself – a true Vlieland tradition that adds seasonal colour to the landscape.
• Dune heath in bloom: In early August, the heath turns purple – a stunning natural sight attracting walkers and photographers alike.
• Highland cattle and sheep: These grazers help keep the dune valleys open and ensure a varied landscape. They roam freely, so you might bump into them during your walk.
• Rich birdlife: The area around Lange Paal and Nieuwe Kooi is excellent for birdwatching. Don’t forget your binoculars!

• Length & duration: around 4 km, takes about 1 hour of walking.

• Location: The Lange Paal forest area lies west of the village of Oost-Vlieland and is easily accessible by bike or on foot. Follow signs for "Lange Paal" from the cycle path along the Postweg.
• Camping in the heart of nature: The natural campsite managed by Staatsbosbeheer is located right in the forest and is the ideal base for nature lovers. Expect peace, space, and birdsong in the morning. More info on the campsite is available on the Staatsbosbeheer website.
