Kikkerbult / Kooispleklid - Observation point

The viewpoint Kikkerbult, also known as Kooispleklid, is one of the most beautiful spots to experience the nature of Vlieland.

What can you expect at the Kikkerbult?

• Panoramic View: This high dune top offers a unique view over both the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, with the impressive valley of the Kooisplek in between. With a bit of luck, you may spot birds bathing in the temporary pools of the low-lying area.
• Seasonal Experience:
  - Autumn & Spring: The area is full of temporary pools attracting large groups of birds. In autumn you can also pick the famous Vlieland cranberries in the surrounding fields – a fun tradition that makes the area even more special.
  - Winter: With snow, the landscape transforms into a fairytale-like scene that feels almost foreign.
  - Summer: Many pools dry up, but the scenery remains impressive and photogenic.
• Birdwatching: Depending on the season, you may encounter special species here, including: Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Grasshopper Warbler, Stonechat, Wheatear, Snipe, Greenshank, Ring Ouzel and even Teal and Shelduck.
• Landscape in Motion: Around 1900, Vlieland mostly consisted of bare, shifting dunes. The wind blew the sand into high moving dunes that slowly travelled across the landscape. Such a high dune is called a lid on Vlieland.
• Historical Story: During the Second World War, there was a radar post here guarded by Jan Cupido. His nickname was “the Frog”, and since then the dune top has been called Kikkerbult.

Walking around the Kikkerbult

• Staatsbosbeheer Walking Route: Combine a visit to this viewpoint with the 6.5 km walk by Staatsbosbeheer through the dune landscape around the Kooisplek.
• Two Viewpoints: Along the way you pass not only the Kikkerbult/Kooispleklid, but also the viewpoint at the Pad van de Staatsschuur – both perfect for a short stop or a photo opportunity.
