Valley of Malgum - Nature

The Valley of Malgum is a quiet and picturesque dune area in the west of Vlieland.
What can you expect in the Valley of Malgum?
- Varied landscape: Walk or cycle along winding paths, open plains, dunes and wet peat areas. The area is rich in unique flora and fauna and radiates a soothing tranquillity.
- Birdlife up close: In spring, thousands of herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls breed here. With a bit of luck, you can see the colony active in the dune area.
- Viewing point Bomenland: From the viewing plateau Bomenland you have a beautiful view over this dune valley and the North Sea beyond.
- History of a stranded ship: In the 18th century, a ship from Málaga stranded here. The name “Malgum” is a corruption of this Spanish harbour city.
- Dodemansbol: A contagious disease among the crew meant that the castaways were not allowed into the village. The deceased were buried on the spot. During the construction of the Postweg in 1907, the skeletons were rediscovered and reburied in a small cemetery. The place is known on Vlieland as the “Bol van Dooie”, or Dodemansbol.
Practical information
- Location: The dune valley is located north of the Posthuys. It is enclosed between the wooded Bomenland and the wide North Sea beach, and borders the Meeuwenduinen and the Oude Kooi nature reserve.
- Malgumpad: The Malgumpad connects the Pad van Zes in the east with the Pad van Twintig in the west and leads straight through this dune landscape.
The Valley of Malgum is a place to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy unspoilt beauty.
