IJsbaan - Nature

The IJsbaan (ice rink) is a shallow freshwater pond on the edge of Oost-Vlieland, which has been part of village life on Vlieland for more than a century. In a hard winter, islanders strap on their skates here, while the rest of the year it is a quiet spot full of life.

What can you expect at the IJsbaan?
- Skating on natural ice: When it freezes long enough, the pond turns into a real natural ice rink. Because the water is shallow, the ice here is often strong enough sooner than on deeper water.
- Rich wildlife: The pond attracts many special animals, such as newts, frogs and dragonflies. With a bit of luck, in summer you can spot a hobby hunting large dragonflies or small birds.
- Natural management: The banks are mown regularly so that the pond does not become overgrown. In dry periods the IJsbaan often dries up, which is typical for this kind of dune water.
- A piece of island history: The IJsbaan was created on the initiative of the people of Vlieland themselves.
- 1908: After consulting Staatsbosbeheer, the islanders were given permission at the end of 1908 to build an ice rink. An ice club was founded, which raised 390 guilders by selling shares. The village association contributed another 40 guilders.
- 1909: The ice rink was dug and could be used in winter.
- 1996: The pond was enlarged and the banks were given a more natural shape.
Practical information
- Combine with: About 650 metres away is the Vuurboetsduin with the lighthouse of Vlieland. From the top you have a wonderful view over the island.
- Tip: Want to go skating in winter? Keep an eye on the announcements on the island, as the rink only opens when the ice is thick enough.
Whether you come to skate or simply to enjoy the peace of nature, the IJsbaan is a surprising spot close to the village.
